SAVE Program

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has enhanced its Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) program to better support state and local governments in verifying U.S. citizenship and immigration status. These updates allow agencies to use Social Security numbers instead of Department of Homeland Security (DHS) ID numbers, making the process more accessible and efficient. Additionally, the program now supports batch submissions, enabling agencies to verify multiple records at once. As of April 1, 2025, the SAVE service is available at no cost to state, local, tribal, and territorial governments. These improvements aim to support accurate eligibility checks for public services and voter registration, in accordance with current laws.

SAVE is a tool that helps ensure individuals applying for certain public benefits, licenses, or registering to vote are eligible based on their citizenship or immigration status. By expanding access to reliable federal data, USCIS is helping local authorities maintain accurate records and streamline verification efforts. The agency plans to continue improving the SAVE program to meet the evolving needs of government partners.
