Starting September 10, 2024, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will extend the validity of Permanent Resident Cards (Green Cards) to 36 months for lawful permanent residents who file Form I-90 for renewal. This is an increase from the previous 24-month extension. The change is aimed at addressing the lengthy processing delays that many Green Card holders face.
With this update, individuals filing Form I-90 will receive new receipt notices, which serve as proof of their status and employment authorization while they wait for their new Green Card. This adjustment is intended to ease challenges caused by extended processing times.
For those who have lost their Green Card and need proof of their lawful permanent resident status while waiting for a replacement, it’s possible to schedule an appointment at a USCIS Field Office. After submitting Form I-90, you may receive an Alien Documentation, Identification, and Telecommunications (ADIT) stamp as temporary evidence of your status.
