USCIS Completes FY 2026 H-1B Initial Registration Selection Process

USCIS has completed the initial registration selection process for the FY 2026 H-1B cap. They have randomly selected enough beneficiaries from properly submitted registrations to meet the H-1B cap, including the advanced degree exemption (master’s cap). Employers and registrants can check their selection status through their USCIS online accounts. Those selected are eligible to file an H-1B cap-subject petition for the beneficiary starting April 1, 2025. The petition must be filed at the correct location or online at my.uscis.gov within the specified filing period. The filing period will last at least 90 days, and only petitioners with selected registrations may submit petitions. Each petition must include a copy of the selection notice for processing.

In addition to the selection notice, petitioners must provide evidence of the beneficiary’s valid passport or travel document used at the time of registration. This is necessary to confirm the identity of the beneficiary and ensure compliance with USCIS requirements. Petitioners filing for selected beneficiaries must still submit sufficient documentation to establish eligibility for H-1B petition approval. Being selected in the registration process only grants eligibility to file the petition; it does not guarantee approval. Employers should ensure that all documentation is accurate and properly submitted to avoid delays or denials.

The total number of H-1B registrations for FY 2026 was approximately 442,000. This marks a significant decrease from FY 2024, which had 758,994 registrations—a 38.6% decline over two years. This reduction may reflect policy changes, economic conditions, or shifts in employer demand for H-1B workers.

More details and filing instructions can be found on the H-1B Cap Season page.
