Visa Screening Expansion

10/12/2025

The U.S. Department of State has announced a major update to its visa vetting process affecting H-1B professionals, their H-4 dependents, and all F, M, and J student or exchange visitor applicants. Beginning December 15, 2025, these groups will undergo an expanded online presence review, previously required only for students and exchange visitors. Applicants are instructed to set the privacy settings on all social media profiles to “public” so consular officers can review their online activity during screening.

Visa adjudications are considered national security decisions, and officers rely on all available information to assess eligibility and potential risks. Reviewing social media accounts helps to:

  • Confirm an applicant’s identity
  • Verify consistency of information
  • Identify red flags that could make someone inadmissible

This update highlights the growing role of digital footprints in U.S. immigration processes, particularly for H-1B workers whose online presence may not have previously been scrutinized.

For applicants, it is crucial to review social media profiles well before the visa interview to ensure accuracy and consistency with their application. Employers and universities may also want to update guidance to help applicants comply with the new requirements.

The State Department emphasizes that a U.S. visa is a privilege, and these expanded checks are part of broader efforts to ensure applicants follow visa terms and do not pose risks to national security or public safety.
